Smiling helps to reduce stress. So many of us lead hectic lives juggling work, family and demanding schedules. This can easily increase one's stress level. Whenever a person is under a great amount of stress the body releases high levels of stress hormones called Cortisol into the blood stream. This hormone, produced by the adrenal gland, increases blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Cortisol is the body's chief stress fighting hormone produced by the adrenal gland, and it is high during periods of stress. However, it's low when one is relaxing. The decrease in Cortisol is associated with increase in serotonin and dopamine. Whenever a person smiles their body relaxes and reduces the level of stress hormones or Cortisol in our blood stream.
