Does Alpha Dog training really work?
This is a question that many people have been asking, and generally it is because people don't really understand what Alpha dog training really is. Many people mistakenly assume that alpha dog training is about being agressive or asserting your dominance over your dog through intimidation tactics.
This is totally false, although it has been popularized by many fear mongering wannabe dog trainers, trying to pronounce their expertise so that they can rip you off with a dog training program that will do you more harm than good.
What is Alpha Dog Training?
To really understand alpha dog training, you need to understand that your dog is a pack animal. They rely more on their instincts to know how they should behave than on emotions like people do.
In a pack, there is a dominant, or alpha, dog that makes sure that everyone in the pack is treated fairly, and behaves in a proper manner. In order to ensure that the pack stays strong, this is often the strongest dog within the pack.
Contrary to popular belief, dog's in the wild don't really fight over who is in charge. In fact, the leader is often determined by age as well as how well they hunt, and care for the rest of the pack.
When it comes to training a dog, you need to understand a little of this primal instinct. If there is no clear leader in your home, your dog will assume the role of the alpha, which means they won't be taking orders from you, or whomever you delegate to take on that responsiblity.
Alpha training is simply a matter of taking a dominant role in your dog's life. You don't have to be agressive towards your dog in order to do this. In fact, often your dog will mirror your behaviour, so if you are agressive towards your dog, they will in turn be agressive as well. This is the natural order of the pack. They follow what their leader does.
How To Take Back The Alpha Leadership Position
If your dog has gotten out of control, and you need to assert a dominant position, there are a few things that you need to do in order to put yourself back into the leadership role.
First of all, start with simple training exercises. IF your dog has become too agressive, you may need to resort to professional help, but in most cases you should be able to do it on your own, with a little practice.
You will need to be patient, and work with your dog's natural tendencies rather than trying to "bend him to your will" like many of the dog trainers out there teach you to do.
This will help you to stop the agressive behavior without the negative effects that will do you more harm than good in the long run. Whatever you do, you need to remember to be patient. Alpha dog training done properly does work really well, but doing it wrong can lead you down a road of disaster that you really don't want to travel.
