Dogs like to live in a group and they have social instincts that can only be expressed by living within a group. For this reason it is known as a pack animal and within the pack there is one leader. When a puppy or dog becomes a member of your family it is joining your pack and it sees you or the person that leads the family as the pack leader. It looks to the leader to guide it and teach the rules of the pack. It also looks for guidance in dealing with situations outside the pack. It will accept these rules and will accept being disciplined if it breaks these rules. In this context, obedience training is the way that the people teach dogs how to behave in the confines of the family and in the wider human community. Because a dog has the instinct to need rules it is keen to learn what you have to teach.

So what should you teach your pet ? For many people their approach to obedience training is half hearted because they don't know what to teach or how to do it. It also takes time and consistency to get your message across to your dog. Eventually they lose the will to enforce the rules they have leaid down and the dog becomes confused. However it is important to teach your dog and ensure that he understands them. Here are the key skills that your dog should know so that you can control it and it can live safely in the human world.

It must be able to socialize with humans, dogs and other animals (principally your family and other pets like cats) in it's home and outside of the home.

It must trust people and be happy to be touched by humans.

It should be able to control any aggression.

It should accept restraint. This includes knowing how to walk in public on a lead without getting flustered or distracted by things around it.

It should react to your calls like coming when you call for it.

It should poop in an area that is determined by the pack leader.

It should be comfortable being alone from time to time.

If it can learn these skills then your pet will fit into the human world comfortably and will be a popular part of your own family.
