Background checks are used by everyone from home employees, landlords, potential mates and anyone else who may have an interest in what you are up to. If you are applying for a house, employment or just about anything else that requires your social, you can bet they are looking up your personal information.

Most people start with the credit report to find out if the subject pays their bills or not. Background checks typically use credit reports not only to verify credit worthiness but to confirm other information such as names and addresses of the subject.

A comprehensive background search will include a criminal and civil records search. Employers will want to know that the subject does not have a history of abuse or discrimination in the workplace. They will use both tools to get an overview of your personality. They will often check immigration records for any patterns as well.

A pre-employment background check is becoming more common. They perform this check before they even offer you the position. They usually include driving records and employment verification. Only when the subject passes these initial tests will they be offered the position then followed up with. You will see these initial pre employment checks a lot of times in transportation companies.

Verifying employment records is also done as a last step in the background check search process. It is usually done after the subject has passed pre-employment screening and has been offered the job. Once you perform all these checks, you will most likely find out everything you need to know to make an informed decision. Using the tools that are available, and doing a comprehensive check will acertain that you are getting the right employee or tenant for your company or for even your yourself.
