Also a person can change his/her name any number of times he/she wants. Some use the UK deed poll office to change one?s name just for fun and some use it because they are not satisfied with their present name.

There are various reasons for changing your name or title, so let?s see what is involved in the procedure for name change. A deed poll is a must for UK citizens to change their name officially. This can be for an individual?s first name, second name or both. An individual?s title can also be changed like Mr, Ms or Miss.

A ?deed? means a written agreement and ?poll? is a legal term which describes how a document is polled or cut. The use of deed poll documents dates back to 1851. If a person wants to change his/her name, child?s name or their title, a five paragraph declaration is required to be made that issues:

? An agreement to stop the use of the individual?s former name.
? To make use of the new name only.
? A request stating that everyone should address the person with his/her new name
? To make use of changed title like Mr or Ms, if applicable.
Conditions that are required for a person to change his/her name include a one-time payment and a deed that needs to be signed with two witnesses. The witnesses should not have any relation with the person changing his/her name. Any individual above 18 years can be a witness. Most organisations like banks, councils or government departments will not accept the deed if it is not signed by witnesses.
