Whenever we speak about lasers today we might mean the silly laser lights that produce a bright red dot on to a wall or presentation board, we may also talk about the invisible laser beams used in high-tech security systems, or we might talk about the far more powerful lasers that are able to cut right through metal.
How are all of these different things lasers? It's complicated, but all of these lasers are based on some similar ideas. For example, the primary design feature of laser is that they control atoms (that are in a state of high stimulation) convert some of their energy into a single stream or laser beam. The strength of this light beam is dependent on the type of laser. Types of laser include gaseous lasers, fluid lasers and semi-conductors, to name but a few. Some of these designs can be used for manufacturing or industrial purposes, including laser cutting systems.
Whenever we discuss laser cutting technology or laser cutting machines we are typically referring to the gaseous or semi conducting lasers. The material needing to be cut will usually determine which type of laser is used. For example, CO2 lasers are generally the best choice for cutting steel and aluminum. What typically happens is that these lasers will vaporize the material with which they come into contact, but this generally requires a two-part process.
The first part of the laser cutting process requires the beam and the material to come into contact. The next part of the process is typically known as the making of a keyhole to use as a starting point. This is typically only done with non-melting materials to avoid making a mess. When laser cutting systems are put to use to cut metal they will often follow the "reactive cutting or "melt and blow" techniques . With these techniques the material is superheated and a second system is used to remove any material.
All laser cutting machines always leave a remarkably neat edge and that's why such a high number of businesses and shops will invest in these enormous machines required to offer all kinds of fabrication and custom component making services.
One question many people ask is if such a technology can be employed in the making of both large and small items, and the answer is a resounding yes. Laser cutting machines can be used to cut almost anything from big steel gates to precision components for model trains and mobile phones.
