Solar cells are used for converting the solar energy into the electric energy. These cells can be bought from the market easily for the commercial use or large scale use. They can also be made at home with the help of simple equipment. These homemade solar cells can be useful for understanding the principle of solar cells. They can also be used for powering the low voltage electric appliances.
Making a solar cell at home generally requires material which is easily available at home and that too in the kitchen. Even if some of the things are not found in your kitchen, you can take a walk to the neighborhood hardware store.
In commercial solar cell, silicon is used but in homemade solar cell we prefer to use cuprous oxide. This is because of easy availability of the cuprous oxide.You will need copper sheet, a few clip lead, an electric stove, sand paper and a micro ammeter. All of these materials are common and are available easily.
Take the copper sheet and cut it in a way that it fits the stove burner. Then clean up your hands in order to remove any grease. Use the wire brush or the sandpaper to clean the copper piece as well. Make sure that the light corrosion is well removed from the copper sheet that you are going to use.
Now place the copper piece over the stove and turn the stove on. The copper will change its color pattern with time. Keep heating the copper piece until the colors appearing on the sheet get replaced with a black coating. Now wait and let the copper cool down. The black coating will disappear within an hour of cooling down process.
Now place this sheet into an open jar. Cut another piece from the copper sheet of the same size and place it in the jar as well. Make sure that they are not touching each other. You may have to bend these pieces of copper in order to fit in the jar properly.
Mix salt with the tap water and pour it into the jar. Do not fill it up. Now connect the alligator clips and connect them to an ammeter using the wire. Place the assembly in sun and watch the current flowing. This is the easiest way to make homemade solar cells.
