Benefits Of ICP Analysis

When we speak of metallurgical testing we mean the testing methods and procedures which are used to assess materials in terms of their adherence to certain specifications, their suitability for the intended use and their reaction to other materials or environments.
Metallurgical testing includes the testing methods such as micro hardness testing, tensile testing, grain size determination, ferrite counts in microstructure, metallography, hardness testing and failure analysis.
The full range of tests available to the metallurgist is complimented by the use of X-ray or EDX analysis and the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Combined, these tests will ensure that all the materials within a given component or product will conform to the necessary standards in order to provide the required performance in the marketplace.
Another procedure used to test materials is ICP analysis. ICP, or Inductively Coupled Plasma analysis, is an analytical technique used for the detection of trace metals, such as Arsenic, Boron, Erbium, Gold, Phosphorous and Zinc.
It is a type of emission spectroscopy that works by the creation of excited atoms and ions, which then emit electromagnetic radiation at various wavelengths which characterise a particular element.
First used in the 1960s, ICP analysis was introduced to improve on crystal growing techniques. Since then the procedure has been improved and is now used together with other techniques to provide quantitative analysis.
There are many different applications for using ICP analysis. For example, if your business manufactures children's toys but you are concerned that some of the imported parts contain a trace metal that means that your product does not conform to industry safety standards, you could have a sample sent away for testing.
ICP analysis is a helpful investigative procedure in the pharmaceutical and medical industries as it can detect metal contaminants in products. Analysis of water and effluent, including trade effluent samples, are other fields where this form of testing is useful.
One of the main advantages of ICP analysis is that it is able to identify and quantify all elements (with the exception of Argon), it also provides multi elemental analysis and this can be accomplished quite rapidly.
ICP analysis and the various metallurgical testing procedures offer organisations across a broad spectrum of industries peace of mind as they confirm the composition, specifications and suitability of materials to ensure they are suitable for their intended use and comply with the necessary safety standards.
