Speed up your computer easily and quickly. Some basic PC knowledge with explanations to speed up the performance on your PC.

The following is just some basic information for people to help their computers run just as fast as they were when you first go it.
The first thing I will go over is the use of a tool msconfig.exe. This tool is Microsoft System Configuration tool. You can change the system startup options, services, and change the boot.ini (Windows XP bootloader)/bcedit (Windows Vista/7 bootloader).
As you own your computer, you install and download different programs. Some programs that are installed will start a service when you boot your computer. One isn't bad, but after you get a handful or more of programs, this slows down the PC. You don't know this because you don't see them running so you thing you may have a virus. In most cases, you just need to stop the services.
To change the startup services
1)Go to Start menu >> Run >> type msconfig
Quick hotkey is hold down the "Windows button" then hit "R", then type msconfig
2)A window will popup. Go to the Startup tab on the top. This would be fairly easy for you to select which ones you want or not. Uncheck all the boxes of any unneccessary programs. You should be able to determine which ones you don't want to run at startup because they will tell you which program it is for.
Ex. I have ITunes installed on my computer but I rarely use it. ITunes automatically will startup each time you boot after you install it. Just uncheck it and the computer will not start it anymore until you click on it to use the program.

Now you can still use this same tool to change any system services to start or stop. To do this go to the Services tab. This may be for a little more advanced users. You could just click on it and read what is does.
Ex. If you have a computer without a WIFI network card, then you don't need the WWAN Autoconfig service to start.
Another thing you can do with this window, which I find very annoying in the new Windows suites, is to change the UAC settings. This is the setting that Windows uses to ask the user if they are sure they want to access a program, open a document, etc. This is the small box that opens each time you use a program and asks for your permission to use it. It is somewhat of a good idea, but it is asked to often.
To change the the UAC setting
1)Go to Start >> Run >> msconfig
2)Go to Tools tab
3)Click on the Change UAC settings
4)Click Launch on the bottom
5)Then change to how often you want to be asked. I put Never Notify Me. You may be different. Up to you.

Now onto some information about viruses and spyware. They are a pain. Some aren't that bad but some can be a serious issue. The tools that I always used and recommend to people is the Norton suite. They are easy to use and give you full access to computer tune-up tools as well as email protection, web protection, disk, and programs. I have never come across a virus that Norton couldn't get get rid of. Other names out there I have tried, which is alot, wouldn't get rid of all the issues. I would have to go manually get rid of some of the issues either in regedit.exe and search for strings or rebooting into Safe Mode. Below is a quick link that I found for Norton 360 at Amazon. Real cheap, usually costs about $100. There is another link below for a free version of Norton 360 with a crack.
