Tips for Keeping Down the Cost of Your Child's Dental Bills

Go to: Article Next Article

It's important to have healthy teeth, and if you're a parent, you should make sure that your child receives dental care right away. Cavities and other dental issues can be easily avoided if they are taken care of right away. If you choose to ignore your child's dental health, this could mean enormous dental bills when you can no longer ignore their dental problems.

Get an Early Start

Start bringing your child to a dentist as early as two years old. Just as there are pediatric doctors for small children, there are pediatric dentists who specialize in taking care of young children's dental needs. Pediatric dentists know how to handle small children; their dental equipment are child sized, and they have things in their offices such as stickers, crayons and coloring books to distract the little patients as their teeth are being checked. But even if your child isn't quite old enough to take to a pediatric dentist, he should be receiving dental care -- from you. As soon as you see two teeth touch each other, you should start brushing your child's teeth. Prior to that, you can clean your child's gums using a soft cloth or gauze-like material. However, don't use toothpaste with fluoride, and if you need to use toothpaste to clean your child's gums and teeth, make sure you use one that is specially formulated for toddlers, and use only a small amount.

When you're putting your child to sleep at night, don't give him a bottle of milk to suck on all night. Frequent (and needless) sucking can cause buck teeth. Furthermore, your child's mouth becomes a fertile breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria if you leave him with a bottle of milk all night. It won't be long until your child experiences tooth aches.

Regular Trips to the Dentist

Your child learns by association so if you begin taking your child to the dentist early on when he doesn't have any dental problems yet, he won't fear going to the dentist as he grows older. If, however, your child's first visit to the dentist is to have his teeth pulled or have some sort of uncomfortable or painful dental procedure done on him, you can be sure that he will associate future dental trips with pain and even worse, he may never want to go back to the dentist again.

Watch What Your Child Eats and Drinks

You don't have to be a genius to know that candy isn't good for the teeth. According to recent studies, however, the frequency of eating candies, not how much of them you eat, is the main cause of many dental problems. So at Halloween for example, your child's teeth would be better off if you let them eat their candies in one go instead of piece by piece every day. Don't take this to mean that it's OK for your child to eat a bag of candies in one sitting, however. You should also teach your child to brush his teeth after he eats candies or anything sweet.

Candies aren't the only things you need to watch out for when it comes to your child's dental health. You need to also watch what he drinks, particularly the juices and the sodas. While juice drinks are the lesser evil than sodas, you should still make sure that your child doesn't drink more than 6 ounces of fruit juice every day. It's best if they keep away from fruit juices altogether. If you should give your child fruit juice, though, don't put it in a bottle for him to suck on. Put the juice in a small cup instead.
