Flat Tyres - How To Change Them
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you find yourself with a flat tyre, then you will want to be able to change it on your own in the event that no one is there to help you. You should definitely take some time to learn how to do it. Most of the time, flat tyres come when you least expect them, and at the most inconvenient times. Whether you have a flat tyre, or a blow out, make sure that you are able to change it safely.
The first thing that you need to do is move to a safe place off of the side of the road. This will keep you out of harm's way on the street. After you do this, you will want to make sure that you have all of the necessary tools that you will need in order to change the tyre. Locate the jack, the spare tyre, and a tyre iron that can be used to remove the lug nuts from your tyre.
The next step is to position the jack under the car in the location close to the flat. Make sure that when you jack it up make sure it is in contact with the frame and not some other part of the car that may become damaged. Most jacks have either a lever or a crank for their operation. Make sure you loosen the lug nuts before you jack or the tyre may spin if you loosen them after it is off the ground.
Once you have loosened the lug nuts, you can remove them easily. Remember to turn them to the left. After you get the tyre off, you will be ready to put on the spare tyre. You will have to line the spare tyre up with the wheel studs. You need to do this with extreme caution, because it may be heavy. Also, make sure that it is lined up just right to ensure safety of yourself and others while driving.
Once you have your spare tyre in place, you will be placing all of the lug nuts back on the tyre. You should take your time and not rush as this helps avoid damage to your parts under the tyre. You are going to need a regular tyre put on the car as soon as you can as a spare tyre is not meant to last long term. This is not a tyre that should be driven on for long either as it's not as sturdy and durable.
