Wood Flooring: Tried-And-Tested Tips
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
When installing wood flooring, there are a few helpful tips which should be kept in mind both before and during the installation. This will give you the best-fitted floor for your property. Some surefire tips to consider for your wood flooring are the following:
First, remember to prepare your flooring. The sub-floor should be dry, smooth and flat. An underlay should also be used over the concrete before finally proceeding to installation. If you are planning to involve radiant heating in your flooring, be very cautious about the instructions. Every step should be carefully given attention to, one at a time. The flooring guide should always be kept in mind. This helps avoid further damages. Flooring panels should be within the room at least 48 hours before the installation. This gives enough time for the flooring to adapt to the room temperature.
Second, the flooring's first row should be composed of full-sized planks. The second row, on the other hand, should be made up of two-thirds sized planks while the third row should be composed of one-thirds sized pieces. The plank joints should always be no less than 8 inches. The patterns of the wood grain should be repeated on a 20-plank interval.
Third, prior to deciding on the direction of your laminate floors, always consider the incoming natural light from the outside. Planks should be positioned parallel to the incoming light from the windows or glass doors in the room. Your starting wall for the installation should be the longest wall in the room.
Fourth, ensure a "surplus". Don't just buy enough supplies. Buy more than enough. In most cases, 10% of the flooring are not usable. Either planks get damaged while cutting or others may have already been damaged during delivery. To make sure that you do not run out of planks, you better stock supplies more than what you should be needing.
Fifth, remember that a 10mm gap between planks should be spared. The gap referred to as the "expansion gap" gives space for the wood to expand during temperature and humidity changes.
Sixth, remember that the first line that you lay is the most important. Apart from being the longest line, it should be totally straight. In cases wherein the first line laid is not straight, it is advised that you do not continue with the wood fitting and start over instead. Poor alignment can cause several problems in the future. One of which is the accumulation of residues in between the grooves of the planks.
Seventh, nail moulding and wood glue should be used when installing laminate floors on the stairs.
Keep these simple tips in mind when installing your wood flooring. Doing so will help ensure the best installation possible.
