There are many species and types of ants that can be found In the United States and one of them is the carpenter ants.
The most common carpenter ants are the black carpenter ants. It is about one-half inch or more in length and shiny black. Other kinds of carpenter ants, however, are as small as one-quarter inch and are reddish brown or two-toned. One consistent characteristic of all carpenter ants is the smoothly rounded outline of the thorax when viewed from the side.
Carpenter ants can take many types of food. They can eat honeydew from aphids, sweets, meat, fats as well as living and dead insects. Many people thought that they eat wood as well since they hollow and damage it, but, in reality, they don't eat wood. They damage the wood as they want to nest beneath it.
Carpenter ants like to nest in live and dead trees and in rotting logs and stumps. Nests are begun in deteriorating wood which has been exposed to moisture. Often, the colony will extend its nest to adjacent, sound wood. Nests are commonly found in porch pillars and roofs, window sills, and wood in contact with soil.
Generally, carpenter ants found indoors during the winter season means that your home could probably has some carpenter ants nests somewhere and if it is spring or summer times, although, they could be nest in your home as well, there are also a possibility that they are just some invaders wandering in from some opening which can be your doors or windows.
It is sometimes quite difficult to trace and locate the nest of carpenter ants. It is especially so when you could only see one or a few ants. In order to determine where they come from, it is worthwhile to spend some time to observe their movement.
