Professional Decorators Vs DIY?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Decorating - do you pick up a brush yourself or lurk in the background making tea, while a professional does it? It can be cheaper to do it yourself, or you could choose to get the really high-quality work that a professional company offers, but there are other reasons why people all over are choosing one way over another.
Professional decorating services have one obvious advantage over DIY; namely, you don't have to do it yourself. For many people with busy working lives or children to look after, this is a huge bonus and a main reason why people hire decorators rather than donning a paint-splattered T-shirt themselves. But there are other reasons too - for example, while it may seem more costly to hire a decorator to do the job for you, it can work our more expensive in the long run to tackle the job yourself. Paint and wallpaper may not cost the earth but decent brushes, ladders and other necessary items - if you don't already have them - can mean the costs mount up and you still have to put your own time and effort in. Added to a professional level of quality and their expertise in the little details such as preparing walls for painting, many people would lean towards going pro when giving their house a makeover.
But don't worry; this doesn't mean decorating yourself is a bad idea. You'll feel proud of what you've achieved when it's done, and adding your own personal stamp on a room makes it feel really special. If you buy brushes or other useful bits, keep hold of them for the future and it'll save you money in the long run. It's also reassuring to know that everything will be exactly how you want it and done your way - and no men in overalls hanging around your kitchen when you come home from work, because you can do it when you want!
Obviously the decision to use a professional or DIY would vary dependant on your requirements. A small painting job requires a lot less time, effort and expertise than a major rehaul of a whole house, something that needs taking into consideration. Making this choice is as personal and situation-specific as choosing the decorations themselves and therefore should be made taking all the factors into account.
If you do fancy having a go at doing it yourself, you can always ask for advice at big DIY stores or surf the internet for some advice before you start, so you can still end up with your perfect result without spending the money on a professional. If not, however, word of mouth is a great way to find a good painter and decorator; try asking trusted friends and family if they know of anyone they could recommend.
