If you're reading this, this is most likely your first pet ferret, in which case, congratulations on your wonderful choice. Few pets are as smart or as interesting as the ferret. You are probably used to hearing the responsibility speech that goes alongside owning a pet, and you are already doing your part by learning, so I'll spare you.
When you get a pet ferret, check its medical history. Ensure it has all of the necessary vaccinations and so forth. If you've gotten a kit, this will normally include a series of distemper shots and a rabies shot.
Considering the pet ferret's nature to get into anything and everything, it's often a good idea to do preventative damage control by limiting their access to many items. You would be stunned by what a ferret can get hurt on. This noted, set up an area and only leave what is necessary, if at all possible.
You would be wise to remember that your pet ferret has a very flexible skeletal system, making them superb escape artists.
That last tidbit was so you don't get taken by surprise when you no-doubt let them out to play and exercise. Many ferret owners also enjoy taking their ferrets for a walk. You do need a ferret harness for this, but your ferret will enjoy it greatly once he or she is used to it.
Do not let your ferret stray from a strict diet. Table scraps are not an option. Their digestive systems can not process fiber. They do not do very well with large amounts of carbohydrates either, their diet should consist mostly of fat and protein. Online is the easiest place to find some specialty ferret food that hits all of these marks.
Aim to spend at least 30 minutes per day playing with your ferret, and always keep an eye out for details and changes in behavior. Should your ferret be coming down with anything, it is your job to notice it, and get it checked out early. As long as you're watching out for your fuzzy friend, it will live a long, happy life with you.
