Garbage Disposals Make Homes Eco-Friendly.
Garbage disposals are not only convenient, but eco friendly. Instead of being sent to a landfill, the solid foods will be churned up. There are always new and improved versions being sold. The newest has something called an "auto-reversing grind feature" and another has a continuous feed disposer that is designed to eliminate jams. There are now disposal systems that are designed to work with septic systems that do a double grinding that makes the emulsification of the foods even safer for this type of system.
Features to take into consideration when buying a new disposal system is the type of feed it offers, the size of the motor, the type of chamber it has for grinding, and the noise level of the unit in operation.
Can anything be done about a noisy disposal?
One of the reasons your disposal is making excessive noise is either too much vibration or there is a foreign object lodged in the system. A lot of times, silverware will get caught down there.
To correct this situation, you will need to be sure that the power supply is off to the system at the electrical box. After that, you can safely feel around for foreign objects. Feel where the grinding takes place.
If the flywheel gets stuck:
When this gets stuck, the motor will just hum. The reset button or the breaker blowing should shut it off. This protects the motor.
Even when you are very sure that the power supply is off to the unit, never put your hand into the chamber where the grinding takes place. You can use a wrench to get into the flywheel turning hole. If the flywheel is not the problem then a bearing in the motor has seized and unfortunately it is time to replace the unit.
