Getting Started With LED Lighting

Where household is concerned the future is already decided. Established lighting technology as represented by incandescent bulbs and Compact Fluorescent Lamps doesn't have much to commend it in a low energy, low carbon world. Light Emitting Diodes on the other hand are based on technology much the same as that which powered the computer revolution - and look how that worked out.
The conventional light bulb utilizes a metal filament that converts nine tenths of it's energy into heat instead of light. Not only is this a poor use of progressively scarce sources of energy, it clearly costs a lot more than it should. It's a lose:lose situation - raising CO2 emissions and a waste of money.
The case with CFLs is significantly better with respect to energy and money saving, but there is no eluding the fact that these have their own set of issues. Such as what to do with them when they're exhausted, since they contain small amounts of mercury. Not a lot in each case, but in all the light bulbs over the world?
Today's LED lights consume one tenth of the electricity that incandescent bulbs of equivalent brightness use. Furthermore they suffer none of the problems connected with CFL bulbs. Also consider that they are relatively diminutive, quite sturdy and can last anywhere from twenty five to fifty times as long as a regular light bulb.
So the obvious question is why aren't we fitting them? This is due to lack of understanding as regards the true costs involved, plus insufficient awareness concerning the product itself. When it comes to costs then it's natural to compare up-front product prices and LED is a considerably more costly purchase. However, the true overall cost is mostly made up of running costs and here LED leaves the competition in the dust.
Installing LED lamps in the home is also a topic with its fair share of confusion and misinformation. There is no shortage of people moaning that LED lights are insufficiently bright enough for use in the household. What they are really saying is that they purchased under powered products, either as a result of ignorance or penny pinching, but expected better performance than they got. Selecting a 1.5w LED over a 6w is no different to buying a normal 15w instead of 60w bulb.
But there is more to it than just making sure your light bulbs are bright enough to begin with. The light from an LED is noticeably different; whereas the majority of incandescent bulbs give a warm golden glow, they are quite a bit more distinctly white, typically narrow beam and extremely bright when viewed directly. All the qualities that make a tremendous spotlight, which is why they are a great choice for replacing halogen lamps. Unlike CFLs they also retrofit either 12 volt MR16 or GU10 mains format bases.
Lastly, because an LED gives off so little heat, it can be fitted in far more places than is possible with a seriously hot halogen light. This means you can easily put them in concealed locations to produce soft lighting effects by bouncing the light off adjacent surfaces. So as well as being bright and sparkly you can blend in warmer more diffuse light that also absorbs color from the materials they are reflected from.
