Positioning yourself for the optimal shot takes some technique and some practice. Your viewpoint is actually a very important element in the creative process. When you find something really interesting you have probably already found the best viewpoint for your shot. After all, you were drawn to the subject where you are standing. The perfect viewpoint is usually right there or nearby. Angles will be a bigger consideration with landscapes or cars.
If you are taking close-up images of objects you can experiment with moving the object to different backgrounds but with landscapes you can try different positions until you find your perfect point of view. With the lighting, you can consider many things. If you have a perfect advantage to take a photo using flash or soft boxes, do so. Use your creative eye to find your distance, angle, and viewpoint.
