Many garages or basement have concrete flooring. Concrete can be readily painted as compared to other high-end treatments. Painting your concrete flooring will not only make it prettier but also more durable and easier to clean. If painting is carried out correctly, your concrete floor can last for many years.
Where to Start:
Although it is not a very expensive aspect of your home renovation, it is not something that you can implement on an overnight basis either. In order to begin your painting project it is necessary for the floor to be thoroughly dry. Just in case you notice some wet spots, especially if it's from the basement, it is recommended that you consult a professional to correct that seepage problem first.
Once you have determined that your floor is and will remain completely dry you will need to scrub your concrete to be sure that there is no residue of any chemicals, like grease on the floor. This is expected from floors in your garage or shop area. This is an important step because if there is any type of foreign substance on the floor's surface the paint will not adhere.
Some kitty litter would be very handy in absorbing most of that grease on the floor if any. Next step is to scrub the floor with the use of Goof Off and then rinse it after wards. Now scrub with a mixture of TSP. Now it will take several rinses until you can mop and have the mop remain clean. Allow about three days for the floor to dry completely before the floor would be considered ready for painting.
Before painting, more prepping is needed:
If there are any bumpy areas on the floor's surface or residue paint you will need to use a sander and some 80-grit paper to remove any old stuff that is stuck to the floor and make it smooth again. A tack clothe would also be helpful in removing some residue from the sanding that the vacuum could miss.
Now it is time to fix any cracks that might be present. You can fix these cracks or little holes with the use of a Cement Fix-all; just be sure to let it dry thoroughly after wards.
Now it is time to paint!
First, you will need two applications of stain blocker and a primer like Kilz. Remember that the surface must be completely dry in between the two applications. Now you can apply a top quality latex flat paint. A paint compressor or a roller will work fine for the painting.
Decorating your painted floor:
At this juncture, if you wish you may add some designs like geometric shapes or faux stone to make the floor look even more beautiful. You can express your creativity at this point, just making sure the floor is allowed to dry thoroughly before finishing.
Best finish for your painted concrete flooring:
To finish your newly-painted floor, apply two coatings of Breakthrough sealer with the use of a quarter-inch nap roller. To be safe, wear a respirator mask when doing this as fumes are sure to be present during this process. Finally, let it dry completely.
Now your new concrete floor is done. You may want to use an area rug or some throw rugs as it is still concrete. Only difference is that you may now proudly claim that it's already a beautiful concrete!
