How to get yourself out of a rut

If you can't recall the last time you attempted something new either at the office or at home, or if the everyday rigmarole that is your life has you wishing for something much more, then it is possible you are in a rut. So now that you have made this realisation what can you do to make a change? The good thing is there are plenty of places to start and I'll touch on a few here.
Firstly you need to realise that you can't rely upon other people to get you out of a rut, it is totally up to you. In this sort of predicament the most difficult part is taking that initial step - particularly if you don't know where to begin. So what is the initial step?
Set sensible and attainable objectives. Don't take on one particular large activity for example 'changing my career' since that will be too difficult to control. Break it down in to smaller more manageable tasks. If you want to shift professions maybe you should try to learn a new skill, or start by simply tidying up your curriculum vitae. These are only some examples of small controllable tasks to assist you to accomplish your overall objective.
I've already mentioned career, but what are some other things you can modify to help yourself out of a rut? If you don't feel like you have any energy why don't you get out there and exercise? Or in case you are currently a gym enthusiast why don't you mix up your routine, attempt some different weights, or do a little more cardio. Every bit as important is your diet, escape from those comfort foods which contain too many carbs or sugars and start eating healthy. Changing your eating habits may create a positive change in your energy levels and as an added bonus; you may also shed a few unwanted kilos. Making small adjustments to your exercise and diet over time may ultimately lead to a total physique overhaul.
Maybe work or well-being isn't your issue. Perhaps you have simply been so busy that you haven't left sufficient time for yourself. If you feel that you are becoming withdrawn then you need to socialise. Make a date with friends to remind yourself that you are not alone. However make sure to surround yourself with positive people that may encourage you because during this period in your rut you need to steer clear of pessimistic energy from other people.
Ultimately, just make an effort to modify your everyday routine; even the smallest change can make a difference. For instance, do you watch TV every single night? If you do, substitute it for a n interesting book. Do you consistently eat chicken on Wednesday nights? Substitute it for the pork. Do you and your buddies go out for coffee every week? Go for a long stroll together instead? The choices are endless. Simply try out as many various things that you can.
Pulitzer Prize-winning American Author Ellen Glasgow once said that "the only difference between a rut and a grave are the dimensions". What I think she means here is that the longer you stay in a rut the more challenging it is going to be to get yourself out. So the earlier you make a modification to a healthier more satisfying lifestyle the better. Don't forget to monitor how well you're progressing; it's very easy to ease back in to a rut if you steer away from your objectives. And most importantly ensure that when you reach a milestone that you treat yourself, take the day off or go see a film.
