Nutritional Supplements - Are They Really Needed?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Nowadays people are more health conscious than ever before and are more willing to spend money on their wellbeing. It's no surprise that the market for dietary supplements is growing and we can see advertisements everywhere, in newspapers, magazines, on TV, buses, trains, and of course the internet. But are they safe to take and do we really need them?
Congress passed a law that defines dietary supplements in 1994. All supplements must meet certain conditions. In short, they must contain ingredients that supplement the diet (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and so on), they must be labeled as supplements and not be represented as a sole item of a meal.
Supplements come in a variety of forms, such as pills, capsules, powders, gel tabs, extracts, or drinks. They are much more than just vitamins and minerals. They can include herbals, botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, animal extracts, probiotics, and other beneficial ingredients.
Why do people take them? For many reasons: to maintain or improve their health, to relieve stress, to boost energy, to prevent disease, or simply to supplement their diet.
Do they actually work? They work by complementing your diet and can offer many other benefits as well. What is important is quality. Low quality products won't help you much. In fact, if you're buying low quality products, you're not only wasting your money, you're taking risks with your health.
How to choose the right supplement? Quality is very important and with the sheer number of supplements available, it's hard to choose. The safest way to buy supplements is from a reputable store and an honest company that stands behind their products and customers.
In general, dietary supplements are beneficial, especially for those with nutrition deficiencies, but you have to be aware that some do carry risks. When it comes to your health use caution and common sense, and choose quality, not price.
