The emphasis of alkaline diet food is on fresh fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, legumes, roots and tubers. Although it looks as if alkaline diet food is a new idea, the actual story is quite different.

When it comes to our hunting-and-gathering ancestors, they consumed a variety of foods very distinct from the foods typically consumed by their modern descendants. Their diet was minimally prepared and mainly consisted of organic plant foods and lean meats. When farming was developed around 10,000 years ago, due to the advent of new techniques and technologies, individuals started adding various food items to their diet and found ways to prepare foods differently. Although societies became more technologically advanced, the change in diet was not a nutritional advance, a fact that is affirmed by the decreased stature of early agriculturalists.

Before the era of the modern alkaline diet, various foods found their way, one by one, into the human diet. First grains were introduced, as a result of the introduction of settled agriculture and stone tools for processing grain into flour. Later, more advanced methods were developed, making it easier to consume refined grains with the introduction of rolling and sifting devices.

Another major innovation was the domestication of animals, which allowed milk and dairy foods such as cheese to be introduced to the diet. At the same time, sodium intake increased as humans became more adept at mining and transporting this common mineral. The increased availability of salt helped to preserve meat for long periods of time.

Almost all the foods that we consume have an acidifying or an alkalizing effect on the blood after digestion takes place. Most grains and nearly all animal foods produce acids in the blood. This plainly suggests that a Western diet is likely to lead to increased acid production in our body.

Alkaline diet food makes alkalinity, and it is considered as the greatest type of food for the human body. Our blood is alkaline by default, with an optimal pH level of around 7.45. The idea behind alkaline diet food is that our diet should create an alkaline blood pH, as it did in the past. Therefore, we should be eating mostly alkaline diet food if we are to keep our bodies at their best. Since this is preferred according to nutritional experts, alkaline diet food will give you the longest life span.

With the hectic and busy lifestyle that we all have, we usually neglect the need for alkaline diet food, and turn instead towards the easy foods, or rather the lazy foods. Since these convenience foods are made by someone else, it is easy to forget about the ingredients that go into our food, overcome by the convenience of tasty food that can be purchased over the counter within a few minutes. Although fast food is tempting, we should acknowledge that it does not have a good effect on our health. After all, why settle for poor health when the history of alkaline diet food provides strong evidence of how it can improve our lives?
