Fingernails

Nails have no color and are transparent. If you are healthy, your nails will look pink because of the blood vessels under the skin. The tissue of the nail is called the matrix and the white half-moon (lunula) is at the top of this. The nail bed is located beneath the nail bed, and it is where the nail attaches to the finger. The skin the grows over the nail bed is called the cuticle, and it protects the matrix by forming a watertight seal over the nail. You shouldn't cut away your cuticle since this will only increase your chance of getting a nail infection.
You can massage your cuticles with oils (such as primrose, camellia, or almond) so the skin will soften and also to help push back the cuticle when manicuring your nails. Rosehip oil is also ideal for this. This oil contains prostaglandin, which strengthens the nail cells and increases circulation - it can also stimulate growth. The oil also contains fatty acids which replenish moisture and vitamin C to help keep germs off.
Common Nail Problems
Brittle, discolored nails, or nails with lines may be symptoms of changes within the body. Brittle nails can be caused by thyroid or kidney problems, poor circulation, and lack of vitamin A, omega-3 fatty acids, or calcium.
Vertical lines may be caused by a shortage of iron, while lines that are horizontal indicate stress levels are raised. Poor nutrient absorption can also be indicated by both symptoms. The appearance of white spots on the nail can indicate fasting or poor diet. Introducing a zinc supplement to your diet may help to restore this to a normal level. Lack of minerals can cause easy peeling, cracking, or chipping of nails, and mineral supplements can help a lot with this.
Common Nail Problems and Possible Causes
Spoon-shaped nails (lack of iron in the diet) Square, wide nails can be indicative of hormonal imbalances. Extremely thick nails can be caused by the onset of vascular degeneration or thyroid conditions. If the ends of your nails curve down, you may be lacking in vitamin B12.
Caring For Your Nails
If you want healthy nails, take care that your diet has plenty of fruits and vegetables. Silica supplements would also be good for your nails since this substance is needed for the formation of healthy and strong nails.
