Human papillomavirus (HPV) is thought to be the genital warts virus. In United States, it is the most common virus being transmitted sexually. 50% of the people who have sex are infected with HPV at some time or the other in their lives. More than 40 types of HPV can infect the genitals of both men and women. Moreover, their effects are not limited to the genitals. They can also infect mouth and throat. This infection goes unnoticed most of the times until it is quite developed and has become complex.
The most common vaccine is Gardasil. This was developed to prevent the types of HPV virus that causes cervical cancer in women. This is given to women ages 9 to 26. It is administered in three injections over a six-month period. It can also be given to young men who are sexually active to prevent the strains of HPV that cause genital warts, but it is rarely used for that purpose since most cases of genital warts caused by HPV are not life-threatening.
Who Can be Infected by HPV? HPV is generally passed between partners during vaginal or anal sex. Cases have been seen when oral sex and mere genital-to-genital contact caused infection. It can also be passed in homosexuals, even when the infected person does not show any symptoms. A person can be a carrier of HPV or Non Hpv Genital Warts even if he or she had sex with an infected partner several years ago. The genital warts virus can remain dormant in the cervix for several months and even years. It can be present in a person and still, the infected person will look to be un-affected. People have more than one partner for sex can get more than one type of HPV.
There are also medications which may be prescribed by your doctor for you to treat your penile warts by yourself at home. These are almost always used by prescription only. There are also over-the-counter drugs used to treat warts, but most doctors recommend not using them. If used incorrectly, the result can be serious pain and worsening of the problem. When you are being treated for penile warts, or during times when you are suffering from an outbreak, you should always wear loose clothes and cotton underwear. This will keep the affected areas from becoming irritated, and it goes for both HPV and nonvenereal warts.
Just like many other viral diseases, genital warts can be treated temporarily. Even if the infected person seems to have recovered, but the disease may come alive several years after the treatment. In any circumstances, being cautious in sexual relationship is the best measure to take.
