Getting Ahead of Anxiety
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
It is natural for human beings to dislike the notion of being separated from someone they care about, or feel connected to in some way. The idea of no longer having significant contact, particularly physical contact, with someone that has become a "part of our life," as some might say, often results in some unpleasant emotional reactions.
The first thing is to restore balance to the person's breathing. An anxiety attack often disrupts the circulatory and respiratory systems, causing a number of effects on their normal functioning. An attack can result in someone having a decreased heart rate, lowered blood pressure, and an increase in the body's circulation.
But how do we actually get to the root of the problem? The first step is to take stock of one's deepest fears. Solving any problem must always start somewhere, preferably from where the problem actually comes from.
Most if not all of us have fear death. Why? It is because most people are clueless about the afterlife. Not knowing what lies beyond this present life actually terrifies a lot of people. This is what Freud and Tillich refer to as existential anxiety. This anxiety is also called the "trauma of non-being." It is a kind of fear that still refuses to be overcome and requires "chronic care."
People suffering from separation anxiety have a tendency to turn inwards when separated, letting the disorder have an adverse effect on their emotional condition. Cases have been reported where patients exhibit sudden signs of partial social withdrawal, or a sudden drop in one's ability to interact socially during the separation period. In some instances, it may also have a physical effect, with movements being sluggish and the body having languid, lifeless movements. It is not only during periods of separation that symptoms are exhibited, however. According to recent findings, separation anxiety also manifests itself as an inability to sleep without the presence of the target person or object.
The problem can only be worsened when a person is having an attack, where the lungs and heart are not working properly and other signs of discomfort such as shortness of breath and low blood pressure are not entirely uncommon.
To his consternation, most of these attempts have only led to more confusion and more questions. As human beings, we somehow fail to grasp or understand concept of the afterlife since this is actually outside the realm of life as we know it here in earth.
Still, most if not all of us try to grasp what is "out there" in order to comprehend, and hopefully overcome existential anxiety. Each one of us must somehow unravel the mysteries of the universe and catch a glimpse of the afterlife.
