Phlebotomy: Definition and Types

Phlebotomy is defined as performing venipuncture or collecting blood from patients circulatory system in order to obtain a blood sample for analysis and diagnosis. Phlebotomy is used as a treatment option for treatment of some diseases related to blood cells or hemoglobin count.

Phlebotomy is classified on the basis of the sample collection procedure and the use of different vessels of circulatory system. Phlebotomy venous blood sample, (also called as phlebotomy, venesection, venipuncture or venepuncture, blood draw) the term phlebotomy is widely used for the withdrawal of blood from a vein which is uncannulated. Phlebotomy arterial blood sample: Phlebotomy can be done from an uncannulated artery to collect oxygenated blood for blood oxygen-carbon dioxide analysis.

Phlebotomy cannualted Vessel: It is classified as a nursing intervention. Which specific skills are required for collection of blood from cannulated vessels or catheters for lab tests. Phlebotomy blood unit acquisition: Phlebotomy is also used for collection of blood and blood products for blood transfusion and is a nursing intervention from the Nursing Interventions Classification.

Purpose of Phlebotomy

Medical Treatment Polycythemia vera is a disorder in which the bone marrow produces excessive number of red cells, is characterized with elevated hematocrit. Phlebotomy treatment is the removal of blood from a vein in a manner similar to a blood donation. Another disorder called Hemochromatosis causes the body to absorb and store too much iron which builds up in the blood to very high levels. Treatment is done by phlebotomy which removes blood the same way it is drawn from donors at blood banks. Pulmonary Edema patients are treated by use of phlebotomy to decrease their total blood volume.

Pharmacologic Phlebotomy

In critical care, this refers to the use of morphine in pulmonary edema to decrease the fluid load in pulmonary vessels by pooling blood in capacitance vessels.

Diagnosis of a disease

Phlebotomy is mainly used for diagnosis of diseases for testing a sample of blood for various chemicals in it. Blood testing is a tool for physicians to determine the condition of a patient for disease. Phlebotomy can be used to collect blood and analyze blood for biochemical, hematological, or immunohematological testing.

Screening and Diagnostic tests are done on blood to determine the course or presence of the diseases. Detection of a disease is done by screening tests especially when there is not enough information about the suspected disease in a person. Verification of presence and assessment of severity of a disease is done by use of diagnostic tests.

Therapeutic drug monitoring

A branch of clinical chemistry which deals with the measurement of specific drug levels at various time intervals is called therapeutic drug monitoring. A narrow therapeutic range exists for drugs that are monitored where the effective quantity of the drug is not varied from the quantity which causes toxicity and side effects.
