How to treat head lice and the many problems that it is associated with is always on parents minds, especially when school is in season. But, once the infestation occurs, it will spread. Thankfully, you can minimize the risk of getting them and reduce the chances of spreading the parasites.
Your best defense is taking the initiative to check the heads of your kids. Your inspection will only take a few moments a couple times a week. More often than not, lice are present usually at the Crown or near the hairline close to the ears. Always inspect under optimum lighting, whether that is natural or artificial, and use a magnifying glass.
Stay alert and notice the warning signs. This will also help to avoid or minimize the infestation. Read notices sent from school as the administration notifies parents of breakouts. One warning sign is the continuous scratching of the head.
To reduce the risk of your child getting lice, you are encouraged to tie their hair back, either in braids or in a ponytail. It must be understood that these parasites don't jump. They walk very quickly and effectively from one strand of hair to another. Therefore, as children play closely, often touching head-to-head, they can easily become infested with lice.
Then, it's obvious that they are on their way into your home. And again, spreading is just as easy in the home as it is in the school. So, avoid sharing hair accessories and brushes and combs. You should know that some lice may end up in fabrics like in your couch, the carpet, pillows, or what have you, and can spread that way as well.
How do you know if someone has lice? As mentioned above, the scratching due to the unbearable itch. That should start your inspection if you haven't been keeping up with the regular maintenance and checking. You should look for nits; these are the eggs of the louse. They are usually at the crown or near the ears. They can be white or reddish brown, depending on their age and how ready they are to hatch.
You will find them about one quarter of an inch away from the scalp because they need the heat that is produced from the head. Treatment is crucial and it must be swift and immediate. Otherwise these eggs will hatch and it will only get worse. You can use natural methods or chemical treatments that you can find at drugstores. The way that you choose to treat it is completely your choice.
