These fungi are unfortunately easily transmitted between people, animals and soil in some cases. This particular type is known as dermatophytes. Dermatophytosis is an infection of the skin which is caused by this type of fungi. This infection is known to most of us as ringworm and continues to keep that name even though a worm has no part in the infection.
A round worm was once believed to cause the infection because this is how the symptom often presents under the skin. The name continues to be used, even though there is no worm associated with the condition. It is necessary for scrapings and test to be done to prove that a fungus is present.
Its medical name is tinea which in Latin means growing worm. There are several medical variations to explain the part of the body that is affected by the infection. Tinea capitis refers to an infection located on the scalp, while tinea corporis refers to an infection on the body. Tinea pedis would be associated with the feet, etc.
Dermatophytes thrive on keratin which is the substance that the outer layer of skin is comprised of. Hair and nails are also a good source of keratin. Twenty percent of the population may currently be affected by dermatophytosis. The condition is much more likely to be present in people that participate in active sports, wrestling especially.
Some fungi can be transmitted from person to person, animal to person, soil to person, etc. Often, the particular cause of a fungal infection may not be able to be determined. Fungi do grow best in moist warm areas.

Ringworm can be treated in two different ways. Topical treatments with antifungal creams are the first option, and will usually clear up the condition in approximately two weeks. When the topical treatment fails to work, or does not work as expected, then oral medication may also be prescribed as treatment. There are a variety of oral antifungal medications that a physician may choose to use.
