As we go through life, sooner or later we will experience some sort of health problem, whether it be through heredity or other factors. Some diseases will burst forth without warning; others can go on progressively without our knowledge.
Gum disease is one that fits in both categories. It starts out silent and before we know it, we have a mouthful of problems. Over 70 % of the population has gum disease issues. For the most part, gum disease is usually considered a localized disease. Not to worry, a trip to the dentist will fix everything. This is not always the case.
Gum disease or ( Periodontal Disease) as it is called is a common and greatly misunderstood disease which can effect the over all health of your body. As it progresses, the infection will spread through the blood stream effecting certain parts of the body.
Approximately, 95 % of Americans with Diabetes also have gum disease, due in part to an increased susceptibility to infections. Gum disease not only is a discomfort and risk factor for those with Diabetes, but also make Diabetes worse.
So - now we know that gum disease is an infection which can travel through our blood stream which can act as a catalyst to complicate any existing conditions. Going to the dentist twice a year is the best preventative maintenance we have in our arsenal. However, as with other health problems, gum disease can go into hiding for a long time even years before we start to experience it’s effects.
Medical science is finding out more about this disease and it’s relationship with other bodily diseases. This should by no means be taken lightly !
Gum disease and Heart Disease are strongly related. Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from heart disease as those without gum disease - Surprised ?
The good news is that periodontal disease can be reversed through alternative means. There are many over the counter products that can help us with our dental issues.
The biggest question that I receive in my e-mails is asking “ Can my gums grow back”?
There are two factors involved:
(1) If there isn’t a great amount of bone loss that supports the gums.
(2) If the gums live in a bacteria free environment, that is to say, eliminating the bacteria that lives within the gum pockets, then the gums will re-generate themselves and grow back. Alternative over the counter products will help speed the healing process.
Yes, we all want a nice smile but more so, we need our health. Bacteria is always constantly forming in our mouth waiting to make our lives unpleasant. In today’s busy society, we may find it difficult to practice good dental hygiene, which is understandable.
