It is no easy task for either party to put a person into a car that sits in a wheelchair or scooter. It can get awkward and put strain on the back. The worst affect is that it could potentially make the handicapped individual feel degraded.
Handicapped individuals already feel that their independence is taken from them. It is worse to emphasize that with moving them in and out of cars. Handicapped vans can help those individuals feel better about themselves.
Through a handicapped van the individual can get in and out of the vehicle without assistance. The van will often times will have a ramp to allow the handicapped individual on. The ramp is also controlled by a remote that makes it a lot easier.
Both wheelchairs and scooters are compatible with the van. The vans are so advanced that the individual can choose to either be a passenger or the driver. There are special modifications on vehicles that allow the handicapped individual to be the driver.
Individuals in wheelchairs need to make sure that they qualify for a driver's license. Other wise the expensive modifications to their vehicle will not mean anything. This driver's license is different than the normal driver's license.
There are multiple tests to receive the driver's license. These tests include vision, hearing, cognitive, and driving abilities. There is also the individual's ability to move from the wheelchair or scooter into the drivers seat.
The testing facilities can list requirements that they see the individual needs. Based on those requirements they recommend a van that would best fit those needs. Because the individual is the one with the experience in the wheelchair or scooter, they need to research the options for themselves.
They can research it through asking other people who have vans. They would be able to provide the consumer's point of view. They could also ask a dealer of wheelchair vans.
