What Does Eco Fashion Mean?

Every year, the fashion industry draws a lot of attention through its innovative campaigns and shows. Fortunately, the people running this industry have become increasingly conscious on the effects of their work and have started making a statement on the importance of preserving the environment. Thus, Eco fashion came to life.
This concept has been around for years, since designers have started using more and more natural fibers and fabrics for their creations. Nevertheless, its actual starting point was the 2005 New York Fashion Week, when a special event dedicated to ecological clothing took place. This created a lot of media exposure and publicity for the matter and has brought it to the attention of the public ever since.
Probably the most important feature of ecologic clothes is that they are made out of organic raw materials, such as linen, cotton or other fibers grown without the "help" of pesticides. They are also processed without using any type of potentially harmful chemical substances.
Then, there is the matter of recycling. Nowadays we recycle almost anything, so clothes shouldnt be any different. Producers use already-made accessories and clothing items to make new ones of a higher quality.
Vintage clothing is another very good option if you want to save money and help preserve the environment as well. Nowadays, buying second-hand is largely accepted and even quite popular, particularly because of the large number of celebrities that have admitted doing so. Specialized stores offer a great variety of accessories and outfits from as early as the 1920's and the prices are usually quite affordable.
Eco-fashion also has a social agenda, because it implies offering an ethically correct work environment for manufacturers. This means they are rather well-payed and get to do their job in a healthy workplace where they are treated with respect.
Finally, keep in mind that, while buying ecological clothes is a very good way of protecting nature, it is actually not enough. There are many other ways in which we can help our planet, some of the simplest being recycling, walking (as opposed to driving) and consuming organic food. This way, if we all work together and keep our share of the deal we will be able to benefit from having a healthy environment for many years to come.
