There is a standard misconception that a good wine has to cost money. This is not the case. As the phrase "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" can also can be said for taste. Every one is unique and one person's quality wine is another person's dishwater, but there are methods to find a satisfactory medium.
The first thing you need to do is obtain a wine you genuinely like. It doesn't have to be dear, in fact, you can find some very fine wines in the domain of ?5 which are of same quality of those at ?10-?15 (and it's always a smart idea to keep an eye out for limited offers on wine so you can experience something you may not take a chance on if it was at its typical price)
Whenever you have located a wine you like, read the label, it will tell you the grape, the flavours and the precinct in which the grapes were grown. Once you know this, you can start to look at affiliated wines from that area or wines with a related flavour. Again, if there is a wine on put up for sale, don't be afraid to try on for size.
When you know the types of wine you be partial to you can then examine which wines work best with what meals. The general rule of thumb is white meat, white wine, red meat, red wine; nevertheless you could be missing out. Try experimentation with light reds with your white meat meals, and similarly try a stronger white with a red meat.
Not everything will be to everyone's liking, but this is what makes testing wines so alluring. If a half-priced bottle of rose from Coop is something you like then good for you, we know that positive wine hides in all price ranges, this is one point that remains true and that is the more you pay for wine, does not guarantee you that it will taste greater.
The best caution we can give you, especially if you are new to the world of wine and still testing your way up through to finding that sublime wine, is to start in the lower end of the price range and making notes of what type of wine that appeals to you. Is it fruity wine with a hint of grape or maybe even an earthy wine with hints of cinnamon, oak or even sunny drenched grass? There are thousands of combinations to wine and all of them offer unique taste and even what kind of food they are suited for. It comes down to how much you dare experiment and remember this little thing when you try out wine - If you always do what you always done, then you will always get what you always gotten.
Take a chance every now and then and go against everyday thinking, it will sometimes end in unmitigated disappointment, but every once in a while you will end up with strange things like "hot salty popcorns and Maltesers" a combination that sounds bizarre but is delicious beyond imagination. With wisdom in these experiments of course comes the ability to be prepared, so keep a few bottles you know will work tucked away in that aspiring wine cellar of yours - Just in case!
