When you are out on vacation, it may be tempting to go to a restaurant and learn about the local food & drink. If you are staying in a place for a week or so though, it may be a smart idea to head to the local market and pretend that you are living there.
Weeding through all the restaurants can be tough to do. Will it really have to take you going to every food & drink establishment and trying everything? Many people have very different tastes and what one person will love another will hate. Testing out the many different places seems to be the best bet. You can also read reviews and see what other people say and find the place that has the best star rating. If it has been rated, then you know that it will be good and something to try.
Food & drink is necessary to life, so if it comes down to it, you can eat something that is not local and not meant to blow your mind. There is no reason to starve just because you are stubborn and want to eat the most authentic food that you can find. Drinks are also interesting to see and to find out what they use to mix and make certain ones. This can be especially interesting if you are a bartender at home. Also will work well if you are a chef, you can taste the local fare and see what they used to put in it. Many places around the world will take you right into the kitchen and show you the fresh food that they are preparing. You will be able to see the catch of the day, if it is a coastal town!
Food & drink should not be too hard to scope out. Another resource you have is your words. Ask a local where their favorite place to eat is. If you are staying at a hotel, ask the front desk where the most authentic food is and how to get there. The country you are in will love to show you where they eat and what they like. It can be a prideful issue. So ask in the native language if you can, what there favorite dish is, or where they would take their loved ones out to eat if they could. Ask around and see what they show you, it just may hold many surprises.
Testing out the local fare can really give you a sense of place while you are visiting. Perhaps there will be something that you fall in love with and you end up living there. Food & drink are important to a culture so immersing yourself there will be a great start.
