Want to drink coffee like a cowboy? If so, a stove top coffee maker may be for you. This can help you make coffee over an open fire and is also called a campfire coffee pot. The traditional stove top coffee maker was made of aluminum or stainless steel and looked like a coffee carafe. The bottom of the pot had a reservoir for water and the top had a round basket with a stem that extended down to the bottom of the pot. Ground coffee was placed in the basket which was supported by the stem.
When the water reservoir was filled, the basket was placed and the coffee was heated till it boils. A small glass top situated on the lid permitted you to view the coffee percolating upward. Once the water above turns brown, this means that the coffee is ready.
Some of the newer stove top coffee makers are referred to as espresso pots. These use steam and boiling water to percolate the coffee. Others use a steam jet to foam milk for cappuccinos or lattes. Plenty of coffee lovers say that this kind of coffee is better compared to drip coffee because of the steam and because the coffee grounds are infused with steam and boiling water.
Another type of stove top coffee maker works like a French press. When the coffee percolates, the grounds are pressed down to the bottom of the carafe. This produces a darker and richer cup of coffee. However, critics complain that this can also make burnt or bitter coffee.
To avoid producing burnt or strong coffee, follow the instructions that go with the stove top coffee maker. Usually this type of coffee maker uses less coffee than a manual or electric drip maker. Don't forget to remove the stove top coffee maker from the heat source if the coffee is done.
