Looking Beyond The Usual For A New Pet
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you want to buy a new pet, we advise straying away from the very obvious. Of course, dogs and cats remain the most common and best-loved pet options, but other animals may be more ideal for your day-to-day life.
Before buying a new pet, always consider the reasons you want to buy one in the first place. This could be a very crucial decision. A turtle, for instance, isn't the best pet for someone in need of companionship. It would be a better suited pet for parents with young children who haven't had any pets yet. Here are other pets that make good non-traditional choices.
There are those who are put off by the fact that hamsters, gerbils and mice are rodents, but they can actually be very good pets if you come to think about it. These rodents aren't space-eaters and since they don't eat too much, they are easy to care for and feed. But don't get too attached to them as these rodents, may they be hamsters, mice or gerbils, don't have the longest life span compared to most other pets. Despite the fact that they are small, rodents need regular care. Beware of nasty odors if your rodent cage isn't cared for properly.
Due to their recent rise in popularity, hermit crabs are another unusual kind of pet to consider, and they're available in most stores. Don't be discouraged by the fact that hermit crabs are shy and aren't pleasant to hold. For inquisitive children, they can learn by watching a hermit crab change shells and burrow. The only care you need for a hermit crab would be to regularly keep their drinking sponges wet, as they would drink from them.
Not quite popular though getting there, prairie dogs can also make good indoor pets. Prairie dogs are usually inquisitive and their personalities are worth mentioning in detail. This is because most prairie dogs raised as pets do not try to escape their new habitats. Litter box training is ideal for prairie dogs, but a lot of owners report that they can easily run around the house with little problem. These unique animals do like chewing on things, however. This can be solved with the proper training, but if not, be sure to protect your furniture and clothing as they could be your pets' next target for chewing. Prairie dogs are still considered wild animals, so we advise only buying from a reputable dealer.
These are just three choices for unusual and/or exotic pets. While it is still okay to go for cats and dogs, they aren't the only pets out there.
