Protecting Yourself from Internet Scammers
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
With the downturn in the economy thats affecting everyone hard it would appear that there are many people out in internet land who are now resorting to preying on average citizens in a very low and scheming manner.
To open up the the problem lets zoom in on one simple example.
We had a client who recently got scammed by a company purporting to do search engine optimization " the company was called therankclimber. Our clients had an extensive telephone interview with rankclimbers apparent sales director, Rob Presley. Presley sold the whole idea of how the company would improve our clients rankings in Google but that to start the process, rankclimber needed a $400 deposit " which our client paid as he thought it was legitimate " their web site certainly looks on the up and up.
I know I know ... our client was quite naiv - He paid $400 to someone he had never met for a service that was at best intangible .. I really want to focus on the fact that after our client had ransferred the funds via PayPal, this Rob Presley just vanished ; Our client sent repeated calls and emails to rankclimber.com that simply unanswered and ignored " so the details of the case were sent to the FBI.
It turned out that this SEO company wasnt even doing the work themselves " they were passing it off to another firm in India " and we called that firm in India and they told us that they hadnt been paid by rankclimber for months !
So it looks like this Rob Presley was scamming his clients and his supplier !
To get some positive result, our client spoke to PayPal who said they will help him to get back his money but that as it was for a service and not for a product they couldnt really do too much, why do PayPal insist on this different policy is a little strange but they wont give any further explanation.
So the moral of the story is . Only pay for something beforehand if you know you can get the money back if its doesnt go well ! And do not use PayPal for any service related transactions off ebay as they wont be able to help you.
And as for Rob Presley of therankclimber.com he will get his what is coming to him - we all know hat goes around comes around and Karma can be a wonderful thing you only get out of this life what you put in.
