The healthcare field is one area that is projected to grow by leaps and bounds over the next two decades. New healthcare legislation and the growing number of older people, make this field even more vital than it was before. Thousands of new nurses will be needed to help staff the many doctor's offices, hospitals and clinics that will be serving an aging and growing populace. Those who are interested in becoming nurses will have a number of job types to choose from. Depending on the degree level, those who enter this field will be doing a great variety of different things, from caring for patients, to administering and managing large nursing staffs. It's up to the student to decide what kind of career she or he wants to create.

These are the findings of a Registered Nurse Population report published in September 2010 by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. The report comes at a time when the need for nurses is expected to increase as baby boomers age and when RNs who are part of the baby boom generation are among those about to retire. The Tri-Council for Nursing has been encouraging nurses to recognize entry level nursing trends and advance their careers. There are fairly immediate needs for nurse educators and advanced practice specialty nurses, the Tri-Council suggested.

Where more nurses over the age of 50 are more likely to have gotten hospital diplomas, their younger colleagues are more likely to have bachelors degrees, the Registered Nurse Population report notes. At the same time, nearly 17 percent of nurses who are older than 50 have graduate degrees, as compared with 10.3 percent of nurses who are younger than 50. In 2008 as well, RNs were becoming more diverse, with 22 percent primarily from black and Hispanic backgrounds and nearly double the male nursing graduates between 2005 and 2008 than there were before 2001. According to the Registered Nurse Population report, some 40 percent of recent nursing graduates also reported planning to leave their current jobs within three years. Most nursing graduates these days are older than 26, the Registered Nurse Population report notes. Most also obtained their degrees in health-related fields, followed by liberal arts, social sciences or humanities and biological and physical sciences, according to the report.

The average annual earnings for an RN across the board for 2008 was about $53,000. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that employment growth for these nurses between 2008 and 2018 is expected to be much faster than the average for all occupations and is to include some 581,500 newly created jobs and hundreds of thousands of replacement jobs. The fastest rate of growth is to be in physician's offices followed by home healthcare services and then nursing care facilities, according to the Bureau of Labor. Registered nurses with bachelors degrees are to have better employment prospects, and those with advanced practice specialties, such as clinical nurse specialists, nurse mid-wives, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthesiologists are to be in high demand particularly in inner cities and rural areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes. The registered nurse schools
offer accelerated and combined degree programs whereby registered nurses with hospital diplomas or associate degrees can move more immediately on to a masters degree.

Institutions such as Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., Regis University in Denver, Colo., Creighton University in Nebraska and Quinnipiac University in Connecticut offer a variety of nursing degree programs that might appeal to adults training for new careers and registered nurses who want to advance their education. These include online degree programs; accelerated programs where students with bachelors degrees in other disciplines can obtain that degree in nursing over the course of 12 months; nursing degree programs at the bachelors level where classes are held during weeknights and clinical experiences take place on weekends; and graduate-level nursing degree programs where students fulfill some course work online and spend blocks of time on campus. Mountain State University Orlando has added a new masters program with a concentration in education. Northeastern University in Boston, in an effort to expand its nurse anesthetics program, is reportedly offering more scholarships for students seeking to study toward this advanced practice specialty.
