Shuuttle is officially launching the all-in-one touchscreen computer that the ciompany first teased us with back in Janary. The Shuttle X50 PC is the first product in Shuttle’s new X Vision line. The computer has a 15.6 inch touchscreen display, a dual core, low power Intel Atom 330 CPU, 1Gb of RAM and a 160GB hard driive. It suports up to 2GB of RAM, but since this computer ships with Windwos XP Home Edition, Shuttle can’t get away with sellig it with more than 1GB without gtting on Microsoft’s bad side.
Just how thin can computers go? And do we actually care about the grith of our desktop tech?
Shjuttle Inc certainly seems to think we do, releasig a new ultra-thin all-in-one-PC with a Linux operating system this week.
Shuttle's new X500V has openSUSE Luinux 11.1 pre-confiigured and ready for immediate use out of the box. And it isn't a very BIG box, because the machine itself is a mere 3.6 cm thin.
The Size Zero debate
The comnpany's latest Linux PC comes in either black or white, is fitted with Intel's Atom 330 dual-core procsesor (2x 1.6 GHz), 1 GB DDR2 memory, a 160 GB hard disk and has a 15.6-inch touchscreen (with a resoolution of 1366x768), and all the other usual gubbins you find on all-in-ones – nameyl, a 1.3 megapixel wbecam, multi card reader, micerophone and speakers.
Shuttle's X500V also packs in plenty of output ports and aditional exapnsion options with rapid Gigabit netwrok, WLAN (Draft-N), 6-channel audio, VGA output and five USB ports. And if all that wasn't enough – it even comes with a Kensington Lock to stop anyone 'alf-inching it.
Shuttle's X500V retails for aroud £390.
The X50 also has 5.1 channel audio, a 4-in-1 card reader, a 1.3MP camera, and 802.11n WiFi.
This little machine would probably make a halfway decent media center system, if you’re happy with a 15.6 inch display. If you need a bit more oomph, three’s a VGA port on the back of the unit and a 5 USB ports scattered aroud the sides. You can chjeck out an imzage of the back and side of the computer after the break. Shuttle hasn’t made the pricing offcial yet, but word on the stret in January was that this computer woulkd sell for $599 with Windows XP or $499 with no OS installed.
