Rather than the picture of a fresh college graduate, many new nurses are older and have already had a career in another field. Nursing is growing in popularity.
Known as second-degree nurses, this growing group is unique to patient care. These people are committed to helping others which is a credit to the profession. These nurses come from all walks of life. Many have come from complete different jobs, but have traded in their shiny shoes for scrubs. Some may have gotten laid off from other jobs due to downsizing, but for others, they just wanted to give back to the world. A lot of people decide to do this because they want to make a visible difference in someone's life. The satisfaction that you get from hands-on nursing is not like any other.
If you are considering nursing, there are opportunities everywhere. You can work in research and technology, or direct patient care, or both. An occupational nursing career could allow you to work in athletic medicine, industrial medicine, or the rehab field. You can help with the elderly in their homes, or infants if you go into home health care.
There are some unusual areas you could also go into with the right specialties and training. You could be a mid-wife, ushering little lives into the world. In order to open new doors, some people will combine their old work with their new career. A paralegal may begin work with medical law and help hospitals create policies. A teacher may mix experience with nursing experience to help teach classes on medical awareness.
There is no limit to the many jobs open to someone who chooses to pursue nursing. Choosing nursing as a second career can open even more options. This career could last the rest of your life, even though it's a second career.
