Next year, the UK will find itself the focal point of world sport as we play host to the 2012 Olympic Games. True to the good old British tendency to revel in failure, the naysayers have been predicting doom for the Games since it our bid to host the games was announced. But can we do it? It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of skilled craftspeople. If you're signed up for, or thinking about becoming a construction apprentice - you could be doing your bit to make sure it all goes off without a hitch.
London 2012 requires a colossal amount of construction work, with an estimated cost of over two billion pounds. For the Olympic Park alone, building projects include more than 30 bridges and underpasses, a pumping station for the sewer network and a giant sustainable energy centre. Many jobs will be created for a project of this size, giving everyone from the most experienced tradesmen to the newest of construction apprentices the opportunity to work on these projects and have a hand in making sporting history.
With so many different kinds of construction apprenticeships all depending on the kind of work the employers trade in, the Olympics will see apprentices working in many capacities, from bricklayers at ground level on the new builds all the way up to joiners on the huge roofs.
As a construction apprentice you'll spend the majority of your time on a construction site getting hands-on experience of your chosen trade, under the supervision and guidance of your experienced and qualified colleagues. They'll be there to answer any questions you have and to track your progress. When you're not on site, you'll spend a day a week - or maybe more - in a local college or specialist training institution, studying towards relevant, work-based qualifications.
If you're based in one of the areas where construction projects are going on, and the timing is right, you could be a part of history by being involved in building for the 2012 Games. That will look great on a CV, and will certainly be a talking point when it comes to interviews for other jobs in the future. Even if you're not lucky enough to work on a Games-related project, at least you'll have the best, most relevant and up to date qualifications for your trade.
