Victorian Decor Doesn't Have To Break A Budget

A new vintage trend worth watching out for is the Victorian design. Sure, intricate carvings, ornate designs, heavy drapes all seem to equate to expensive price tags. The definitive word however is "seem." An impression that doesn't exactly hold true. Victorian design can be affordable as the home theme next door.
Repainting is the best start for a decorating project and using Victorian colors is no exception. You would have to use rich and dark colors to stay true to this look. Because of the richness of the colors, it's not advisable to paint the entire walls especially if the room is a small one. Dark colors absorb light making a small room appear even smaller. Hence, it's better to choose and highlight one wall, accent it with a dark shade and then paint the rest of the walls a light color.
Next, think as the Victorians did and get a brilliant Oriental area rug for the floor. Not only were the Vics fond of its ornate patterns, the vivid colors added more depth to the overall intensity of the room's colors.
Replacing your old furniture is a pain in the pocket if you're decorating on a budget. Hence, a good option is to accessorize the existing furnishings to achieve a brand new look. Sofas and chairs for instance, can be easily draped with decorative fabrics, throws or tied with ribbons, a Victorian trademark.
For the bigger furnishings, instead of the typical Victorian walnut furniture, you can opt for the wicker type.
There are three kinds of wicker - paper, reed and resin. Paper wicker is made by twisting the paper into strips and then woven after. Quite creative, isn't it? Reed wicker on the other hand, is from natural fibers and is made by soaking in water and then woven into a crisscross pattern. Lastly, resin wicker is made from molded plastic and is considered the sturdiest of the three kinds. It's easy to maintain these wicker materials. Nothing you can't do with a wet cloth and a good scrub.
To adorn wicker items, floral patterns, linens with embroidery, ribbons and lace are great accents. You can find these accents in many thrift stores and discount stores.
Victorian design is also notable for its velvet and brocade fabrics. Because these textures are quite heavy particularly for warm weather and also quite expensive, you can just use them as accent pieces. Throw pillow covers or a simple drape will do, without hurting your budget.
To complete the Victorian look for your home, display sepia-colored photos (you can have your current photos printed in a sepia color) and hang artworks depicting the Victorian period. Even postcards or greeting cards that denote the Victorian time will already look classic when displayed with nice frames.
Your home will be a set straight out of a period romantic movie.
