RVs and Motor homes are helping fill National Parks this summer and are pushing park's visitation to near record numbers. As people are trying to find ways to save money post-recession, they are looking to what's closest to home for cost-effective vacations. This results in more Americans spending time in our National Parks, monuments and wilderness spaces.
2009 visitation to National Parks fell just 1.8 million visits shy of setting a record for the National Park System. Visitation to the National Parks in 2009 jumped to 285.4 million, an increase of more than 10 million over 2008 levels and within sight of the record 1987 turnout, when 287.2 million headed into the parks, reports National Parks Traveler. Last year, Yosemite National Park had 3,866,970 people visit.
Glacier National Park is seeing more people coming through their entrance points. In fact, their visitors have increased by 3.7% over last year. If trends continue through the busiest months of July and August, there may be a new record for National Park visitation. Motor home owners and RV enthusiasts are also heading out in record numbers. Since January of 2009, campgrounds and KOAs have reported increasing reservations.
USA Today reports on travel trends, through their USA TODAY/Gallup Poll which found only 16% of participants said they would fly more frequently or stay more frequently in hotels over last year. About 30% of those interviewed said they would not travel as much as last year.
Staying closer to home translates to increased savings. Traveling by RV or motor home translates to mobility, the ability to explore the unexpected, experience some of America's small towns and some great opportunities for family bonding.
There is term being used to define how people are traveling this year and it's 'budget traveler.' This means people are searching for the best deals before booking travel.
