Storing A Caravan
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Not everyone enjoys using their caravan in the winter months, so many mothball their caravans for the winter. If done well a caravan can emerge from its winter hibernation in good condition and be ready to use again with only a few hours work.
Cleaning your caravan thoroughly is vital if you want your caravan to be in good condition when you open it up in the summer. Pay particular attention to the cleaning of the shower, toilet, fridge and oven. Prop the fridge door open, so that air can circulate. Turn off the gas, and drain the water from your entire water system. Remove anything that is perishable.
Where you store your caravan is important. If you are using your caravan a lot having it outside your house makes sense. However, if your caravan is in your way at home you can have it stored in a secure area away from your house. Doing this has some advantages; many storage companies will pick up and deliver your caravan for you and will clean it for you. They will arrange for repairs and servicing to be done if you ask them to, thus saving you time and inconvenience.
Try to find a company that will keep your caravan indoors. It will be completely protected from the elements and it is more secure.
Should you be forced to use an outside storage company make sure that you choose one, which has on site security and CCTV. Being able to check your caravan on a regular basis is important when using outside storage. Caravans can spring leaks in the winter. You also need to check it has not been broken into. Thieves target caravans in the winter. Do not store anything valuable in your caravan.
Regardless of where you choose to store your caravan, winter is a good time to get your caravan serviced. If you do so your caravan will be ready for you to use immediately in the summer. Servicing ensures that the gas and water systems are safe to use. A good service will also look for flaws in the bodywork or windows, which could turn into leaks during the winter months. Get any repairs or improvements to your caravan done whilst it is not in use.
