Summer time and living is easy! Hey, it's called summer vacation for a reason. There's no better time to get out and about than during the hot, blazing months of summer. Take advantage of the weather, the low cost of gas, and the season specials and get out -- get going and get to one of the most gorgeous destinations in the world: Los Angeles. I know what you're saying: LA? What about the smog? What about the traffic? What about the gangs?
Yeah, the traffic is bad -- but not impossible! And yes, the smog is as thick as ever, but try to think of it as par for the course. No one ever says they're not going to go New York because of the skyscrapers and bad attitudes, do they? There you have it, then. And as for the gangs, as long as you stay on the Westside and near the beaches you should be just fine. Just don't go poking around in Venice after dark.
Now, the Westside and near the beaches encompasses a broad spectrum of communities. While few can afford to stay in Malibu or the Pacific Palisades, some can afford Santa Monica or Venice, and most people can manage to afford a room in Manhattan Beach. Now, it's safe to assume most people have heard of all those cities, expect Manhattan Beach, which is a shame (unless you're a local and don't want more tourists crowding you out of your territory). Fair enough, but tourists are people too.
Manhattan Beach is a total must for music buffs. The Summer Music Festival is one of the best in LA County, especially when you take into account the bon fires and California vibe good-times. Picture you favorite band, like the Beach Boys, playing as the sun sets on the Pacific and people gather to hold hands, talk, and generally sway to the music. You don't get more quintessentially Californian than that.
If you're more into the club scene, fear not. Manhattan Beach thrives on the nightlife and the proliferation of clubs and bars along the beach won't disappoint. Keep in mind that the club scene, as with every scene in Southern California, is very laid back. Don't be surprised if total strangers strike up a conversation with you and invite you up to the Hollywood Hills for a night cap. Hey, this is LA -- anything can and does happen.
