From Broadway theatres to Fifth Avenue shopping, art galleries to museums, parks to bridges and the Empire State building to the Statue of Liberty, everyone can find a side to New York that will satiate their appetite and you need a really big appetite when you’re in the Big Apple.
Many people have preconceived ideas about the city that never sleeps, but it’s a good idea to leave these at immigration. New York has something to offer everyone. Over one and a half million people live on Manhattan Island, an area of under 23 square miles, so this densely populated city is best explored on foot.
A good place to start is to wander along Fifth Avenue where you will almost feel at home because this long street has been centre stage in hundreds of Hollywood movies and TV shows. From the Museum of Modern Art to the Rockafella centre, you can spend a few days cruising around the sites on this street alone. This is also where you will find the main high-street and designer shops and famous stores such as the NBA store, the giant glass box that is the Apple store and FAO Schwarz used in the film ‘Big’.
Midtown and Broadway is where you will find the theatre district. This hectic part of town is best seen at night when the neon signs look like a mini Las Vegas.
Speaking of bright lights, visit the most famous cross-roads in the world Times’ Square, after dark. Standing at this busy road juncture is when you really feel that you are in the movies and New York‘s magic starts to take hold.
Moving down Manhattan you will get to the Empire State building. This amazing art-deco tower was the first skyscraper in the world and the view from the top is still incredible. Again it is worth taking advantage of the night-time opening hours as on a clear night you can see the lights of all five boroughs of New York City.
You can visit the site of two very famous skyscrapers and remember those that were lost in the September 11th attacks at Ground Zero. This eerily quiet memorial is a great lunch spot and will give you a chance to reflect on another side of New York, as a place where people actually live, not just a movie set.
The Greenwich and Soho district is probably the coolest, most style-conscious area of NYC. This area on lower Manhattan is great for shopping, having a coffee and partying in chic clubs until 5am.
