Good Old Ponta - What a Place!
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
You can know when South Africans give someone or some place a nickname; it's a much liked person or place. So, also with Ponta, (Ponto do Ouro) which is just across the border from South Africa, at the southernmost tip of Mozambique. Ponta is little more than a village consisting mainly of tourist accommodation, pubs and restaurants.
Its reputation as a holiday destination, however, far outstrips its size and with very reason. It is casual, friendly, offers a variety of accommodation types, have great little Portuguese restaurants and pubs, a magnificent sea, prime diving opportunities, real good fishing and friendly beaches. If you still wanted more, well then there is the very pretty scenery and dune forests. For any person this has to be paradise, particularly as it is remote and takes an effort getting there, making it a non crowded balmy destination all year, but particularly pleasant in the South African winter from May to August.
Ponta d Oro (yet another name!) is some 600 kilometers from Johannesburg but ample travelling time should be allowed to cover this distance, due to poor roads and many deviations and road works, particularly from the Jozini dam area, up to the border. Allow another three hours to your normal travelling time over such distance just to be on the safe side. From the border the last 20 or so kilometers require a 4 x 4 vehicle as the road (track) is deep sand in the rainy season there is a lot of water pools and slippery mud about. If you don't have a 4x4, you can leave your vehicle at the border where it will be guarded and arrange for a 4x4 to pick you up.
Once in Ponta, you will have forgotten all about the travelling episode, when you see and smell the Indian Ocean and have your first Portuguese lager - ice cold.
