Beware of Online Marketing Services That Guarantee The Number One Google Listing
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Since I own a business, I often receive calls from companies that claim they can increase the exposure of my business by getting the website on top of Google's list. These companies offer their online marketing, search engine optimization and other small business marketing services. I'm interested to learn more. I mean, how much of my business can they actually know? Do they know where my website is listed at right now? Do they even know what keywords to use for my business? I ask them both of these questions, and they have nothing to offer. I decide, at that moment, that it's all a scam. I hang up!
Is there any business that can really make this guarantee? After all, knowledgeable and experienced SEO consultants don't guarantee a number one search ranking even with the chosen keyword people would use to find the service I provide.
That's the con! These dishonest businesses tell you they'll get you to Google's top spot with the keyword they designate for your website for a small fee. You have nothing to do with it. And, the keyword they've chosen for you may not have anything to do with what your website/business is all about. Sure, you can get that top spot using any ole keyword that nobody uses to locate you. However, does this do any good for your business' bottom line? Not at all!
The only time getting on the first page of search engines matters is when someone uses a keyword to find your service/product. Thus, research and talking to the business owner to learn what keywords are most effective are a priority to get that top ranking on search engines.
Let's use my website "Wellness Rhythms" for an example. I live in Denver, Colorado and practice Network Spinal Analysis. Now, if someone inputs the following words in the search engine box: "Denver Network Spinal Analysis" or "Denver Chiropractor", my website is typically one of the first three on Google's first page. This is really good considering that a search of just "Denver chiropractor" returns a hit of 2,620,000 results. However, if someone just types in "chiro", my website won't be near the top at all. That's not too big of a deal since no one generally uses that term to do a search. Of course, it would be a good idea to ready my site with that term just in case. But really, why should I?
Researching keywords that are relevant to your website and ones that folks use to find the service/product you offer is a must. It's going to take some time to utilize those keywords so your business and website can be found. Next, you'll have to use white hat techniques and the keywords in conjunction to help bring your website to any search engine's first page. The reality about business owners is this: most simply don't have the time it takes or the online marketing skills it takes to get that top search engine ranking for their website. And, because of it, they miss out on increased traffic, which also means they miss out on profits.
Should an online marketing service come to you about their services, be sure to do your research before you finance any money toward their small business marketing service.
