At one time, laptops were frequently heavy, expensive, and underpowered. However, with the improvement in technology the modern laptop a very portable and can perform as well as most powerful desktop computers. But with the extra features and the portability, problems can happen that can cause a broken laptop.
The power source is the most common hardware problems that are found on a laptop. This is when the laptop won't turn on following numerous attempts. The battery may, at first, seem to need to be recharged, but plugging the laptop into an electrical outlet doesn't help. The problem may very well be a bad power jack or adapter. The reason the power jack on a laptop is easy to damage is the result of the frequency is uses. With owners unplugging and plugging in the Ac adapter carelessly, the jack can become damaged as the solder joint wear down which prevents the laptop from receiving external power. After the battery has runs out, the laptop can't be recharged and won't function.
Overheating is another laptop repair problem that owners may face. This is the result of airflow being blocked to the laptop or by a faulty fan. Laptops are cooled by a small fan that turns off and on that brings cool air in from the outside to cool the laptop off inside. If this fan stops bringing in the cool air, there are components in the laptop such as the hard drive and the CPU can overheat which will cause the laptop to intermittently shutdown. In addition, a laptop may overheat if airflow into it is blocked. This is commonly caused by the laptop resting on a soft surface like a pillow when being used. To prevent this, a laptop always needs to be resting on a hard, flat surface when it is turned on.
Laptops are portable, but they usually can suffer a lot of abuse. Falls or bumps are the primary reason for laptop failures. Impacts are responsible causing malfunctions of the hard drive. Sudden impacts disturb the delicate reading head or magnetic platters in a hard drive which will make it unreadable. If this should happen, the computer may fail to boot to the operating system. If a warning message appears on the screen that tells the owner that the hard drive has failed, the drive needs to be replaced.
There are also some laptop problems that are caused by software. Sometimes laptop owners will complain about their laptops acting strange or being slow. These problems are probably caused by a software problem as opposed to a hardware fault. The usual causes of software problems are viruses, incompatible software or bad drivers. The operating system and the drivers should be kept and disk defragmentation and virus scans performed.
