Fixing A Zippo Flint Wheel

There are few products that enjoy the same reputation for quality as do Zippo lighters. Part of the durability and reliability of these devices is due to their being enormously simple in their manufacture. This simplicity means that there are few parts to break and that reliable service is the norm. The one part that can be a challenge to replace is the flint wheel. Most users, however, will find themselves able to handle the task.
One will need a small punch, a rivet gun and a replacement wheel to complete this task. Begin by disassembling the entire lighter. This means taking out the cotton reservoir, the felt, the flints and the flint retainer spring. Set these parts out so that they can dry. One does not want lighter fluid on the surfaces when they're performing this task. After the lighter is dry, it's time to remove and replace the flint wheel.
Start by completely disassembling the lighter. This means removing the felt, cotton reservoir, flints and flint screw. Set all these parts aside and give the lighter some time to dry out before proceeding. Make certain not to leave the reservoir or any other lighter fluid-soaked parts in contact with any painted or finished surface. Lighter fluid is a powerful solvent and will damage such surfaces.
After this is completed, take the entire lighter to be repaired apart. Remove the insert, the reservoir, the flints and flint screw and set all the parts out to dry before working on the lighter. After all the parts have dried out, one will need a small rivet gun and their punch to finish the process. Simply remove the flint wheel from the target lighter and set the new one in place with the rivet gun. Remember to be gentle with the lighter when performing this task.
If the flint wheel is properly replaced, it should turn with no resistance and it should rotate straight along its axis. One can always remove the rivet and repeat the procedure if this is not the case. A Zippo can offer a lifetime of service and, with minor repairs such as these, several generations of service. Remember to check the flint wheel every so often to make sure the rivet holds.
