Avoid These Mistakes When Fence Building

Every day someone builds a new fence. Most are built correctly, but with a few simple insider tips you could build a better looking, more durable fence. Follow these little known tips to build a better fence.
The first step to building a fence is digging holes 8 feet apart in which you will place 4"x4"x8' treated posts. Use a posthole digger and you will quickly and easily be able to dig holes 2 feet deep. A little known secret is that the posthole digger should be used at an angle around the bottom of the hole, creating a ball shaped anchor at the bottom of the cylindrical hole that will hold your fence post.
A very common mistake is that people do not realize that wood does not stick to concrete. The simple solution to this problem is to paint the bottom two feet of the fence post with black roof tar. The tar will seal the posts and allow the concrete to stick to the post.
Don't get in a hurry once the posts are set in concrete. Set them, level them, and then allow them an entire day for the concrete to set before you begin nailing into the posts. If you don't allow adequate time for the concrete to dry hammering will knock the posts out of level.
Use three rails to build a fence post that will last for years. Place the top rail horizontally along the top of the fence posts. Make sure that you do not install fence slats more than 8" above the top rail. Place the center rail evenly between the bottom and top rails. Unlike the top rail, nail the middle and bottom rail horizontally to the fence posts. This helps prevent fence rails from warping. It also helps build a sturdier fence.
There is a danger to your fence of which few people are aware. That is the linger factor. When water runs down the face of the wood and lingers on the bottom lip it can be absorbed and rot the wood. This is the same reason why fascia boards are easily rotted and warped. Coating the top and bottom lip will prevent lingering water from ruining your fence.
